Our history

Aardvark Alternatives first began life in the 1970s in Carmarthen Indoor Market. Back in the days of telephone directories, the name was chosen to appear right at the very beginning—and we’re so glad it was, because we love the name and everything it represents today.

The business later moved to Mansel Street, where Caffi Adref is now located. Over the years, it passed through the hands of a number of dedicated owners before being taken on by the Lawrence family.

The Lawrences eventually moved the shop to its current home at 6 Lammas Street, transforming the space into the shop you see today. The upstairs was once part of the retail area before becoming a café room, and at one time they also ran a separate café next door at number 5.

Interestingly, the building behind the shop was once home to the old Conti Ice Cream factory—just one of the many stories tied to this special place.

In March 2025, we (the Gallie family) were proud to take over the shop, and we’re excited to continue its story as part of the Carmarthen community.
